Wii make are own games!!!

Home and independent game makers are getting a chance to put together titles for Nintendo's Wii console.

The hi-tech firm has released a game making tool called WiiWare that gives budding game makers the data they need to use the console and its innovative controller.

Wii owners will be able to download the games through net channels accessible via the console.

Nintendo said the first games would be available for download in early 2008.

Fresh ideas

Anyone wanting to use the WiiWare tool will need a basic knowledge of programming, said Nintendo. It lets people start creating their game on a PC but it must be fine-tuned and finished on the console itself.

The company said it expected game makers to use the Wii's motion sensitive controller to create "fresh takes on established genres".

"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president in a statement.

Once quality tested by Nintendo, games created via the WiiWare service will be put on the Wii Shop channel so owners can download them.

Wii owners must spend points to get the games. Owners buy Wii points by credit card or by purchasing cards in stores.

The move by Nintendo follows a similar initiative by Microsoft. It has made an express version of its XNA game making tools available for students and hobbyists so they can craft titles for the Xbox.

PS3 Tom Clancys Rainbow six Vegas style

For anyone holding out to play the PlayStation 3 version of Rainbow Six: Vegas, the wait has certainly yielded the most generous version of the game so far. It's a substantial and feature-packed game: It includes all the features of the 360 version (bar the Vision Cam face-mapping technology) and the recently released Player's Pack Red Edition, new multiplayer maps, and some extra tweaks like using the Sixaxis to control the under-the-door snake camera.

The single-player campaign is exactly the same as we've seen before in the 360 version, and it's a far more substantial campaign than what we've seen from this franchise previously. Whereas previous Rainbows were little more than a series of well-designed skirmishes loosely hooked together in sequence, the new game is actually built around a story arc. While it's certainly not the most imaginative narrative you'll ever come across, it does bring the game a far greater sense of purpose than we've seen in previous episodes, despite being marred by a Halo 2–style cliff-hanger ending. It's fun, it's relatively short, but it's not really the reason people play Rainbow Six games.

The real meat comes from the multiplayer modes, which in this version include two co-op modes (a four-player version of the story mode, which is tremendous fun, and a co-op terrorist hunt) and eight adversarial modes. Of most interest are the two new modes from Red Edition, Total Conquest and Assassination. The former is a team-based capture-and-hold game, which is remarkably fast-paced when played on some of the smaller maps, and requires coordinated teamwork for the best results. Thankfully the voice functionality is remarkably clear, with all the chat noticeably less crunchy than that heard on the 360 version. Assassination, similarly, is big on teamwork, as it's an attack-and-defend game with a VIP instead of a static object. On the defending team, one player is randomly selected as the target, and is dropped into the environment in civilian clothes and equipped with just a handgun. The objective is for the team to escort him to an extraction point while eliminating the opposition. If the VIP dies, the game is over. When played "seriously" it's remarkably fun, but of all the modes in Vegas it's one most likely to be spoiled by uncooperative play. For shooter fans looking for an alternative to Resistance, particularly online, Vegas offers plenty to keep things interesting. It's solid, pretty good-looking, and packs a thoroughly decent single-player campaign, too.

The traditional May timeframe for E3 has come and gone, and you may have noticed that despite the show's absence, we were still privy to a series of high-profile game announcements, such as the unveiling of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction.

With that said though, the revamped and slimmed down Electronics Entertainment Expo taking place in July still looks to provide plenty of bang for its buck. Heavy hitters like Microsoft, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, 2K Games, Activision, and more will all descend on the expo to display the latest and greatest in gaming.

In order to prepare for the upcoming event, we've looked ahead and highlighted some of the titles we're interested in seeing this July at E3. Will they all be there? We're not sure. This is just our wish list, and some of these titles will likely not be there, and there will likely be newly announced titles just as exciting as these. This newly revamped E3 is a thing of mystery, and we're assuming it will be chock full of surprises.

Single-Player Master Chief
The folks at Bungie have crafted the world's most effective smokescreen with the Halo3 multiplayer beta. This remarkable gift to gamers has effectively allowed Bungie to keep mum on the final single-player chapter in the Halo trilogy, as gamers spend less time hounding them with questions and more time enjoying the beta.

While nothing is confirmed (Bungie is notoriously tight-lipped), we hope that this year's E3 will be the launch point for unveiling the Halo 3 single-player campaign. It's time to discover the fate of Cortana, the state of the Covenant, and bring about the resolution of this epic war.

At E3 we shall have the opportunity to add context
and gain a better understanding of these titles.

Nearly Final BioShock?
Irrational Games' first-person shooter/RPG Bioshock has been a hot topic of conversation. Its showing at last year's E3 prompted gamers to ask, "Does it really look that good?" The answer is: absolutely. Even more impressively, further viewing of the trailer on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace demonstrates that the gameplay may even outshine the visuals. This creepy, underwater, alternate reality first-person adventure is nearing the final stages of development, and the quickly approaching E3 seems a perfect place for one last media hoorah before its release.

Halo Wars Expected
Again, while nothing is confirmed, it seems only natural that E3 will be used to further expand on last year's E3 bombshell revelation of the real-time strategy game, Halo Wars. While last year's trailer was a site to behold (available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace), it is high time we get a look at the groundbreaking gameplay and next-gen features.

Understanding EndWar
New to the Tom Clancy brand is Tom Clansys End War, and like Halo Wars, little solid detail is known about this mysterious real-time strategy game. We do know from the recently released trailer (available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace) that it takes place in the not too distant future, and with Tom Clancy attached, we can safely bet that real-world tactics and reasonably evolved weaponry will take center stage.

Mercenaries Evolved
Perhaps the most surprising game of the last year or so was Pandemic Studios and LucasArts' out-of-the-blue sandbox wargame Mercaneries. Its free-roaming missions and on-the-fly upgrade and purchase system for delivering weapons made for instantly classic gameplay.

With Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, developer Pandemic looks to push the technology to new destructive heights, introduce a vibrant new environment in conflict-ridden Venezuela, and most impressively, introduce cooperative play over Xbox LIVE. We look forward to uncovering more and going hands-on with this title at E3.

The Kane and Lynch Experiment
Speaking of cooperative play, IO-Interactive's announcement of Kane and Lynch: Dead Man caught everybody a bit off guard. This seemingly well-into-development title burst onto the scenes several months ago. Both Kane and Lynch are hardcore criminals, and when they're freed from incarceration during transport, it's not to enjoy the sweet taste of freedom, but to serve the nefarious interests of Kane's previous employer. You'll play as either Kane or Lynch, switching between them in single-player or choosing one or the other when playing with a friend.

Early announcements and coverage highlight the disparity between Kane and Lynch, and how they play and react differently to all manner of situations. After going dark for several months after the initial announcement, it will be exciting to see how this promising action title is shaping up.

PS3 title Ninja Gaiden Sigma a top-seller in Japan

Tecmo Inc.'s action title Ninja Gaiden Sigma for Sony Corp.'s PS3 is a top-seller for the console in the latest sales data from Japan

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that Ninja Gaiden Sigma sold 46,307 units between June 11 and June 17 to rank as the third best-selling title in the top 50 game sales.

The top performance of the title help to boost PS3 sales by eight percent in the week.

Additionally, Activision's Call of Duty held respectable sales to rank at No. 14 in the same period.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is a makeover of the title originally developed for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox. Sigma features revamped high-definition graphics and a new playable character for the PS3.

The title will be released in the U.S. this July.

The solid debut of two new PS3 software offerings is a strong indication that the console can rebound from lagging sales in the territory. The PS3 has been outsold by Nintendo Co.'s Wii 3-to-1 in Japan in year-to date sales according to Japan game publisher Enterbrain.

Sony this week said that it will release 380 titles in the business year to bolster PS3 Hardware movement. The company expects to ship 11 million units worldwide by Mar. 2008.

Game Informer Magazine broke the first news on Devil May Cry 4 almost a year ago, and fans of the series are clamoring for any new information about the game. Unfortunately, even with E3 approaching, Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and the DMC team are remaining tight-lipped. However, we’re quite impatient, so we’ve managed to get a number of tidbits that you may not know about the game from Capcom and Kobayashi-san himself.

1. Dante is not just an unlockable character.
While Kobayashi-san has stated that Dante will be a playable character in Devil May Cry 4, Dante won’t be just an unlockable character after beating the game. “As the story unfolds, Dante will also be made available to play. He is not an unlockable bonus character, but is playable as part of the game’s storyline.”

2. Dante won’t be the only returning Devil May Cry character.
When we asked Kobayashi-san whether or not characters such as Trish or Lady will make appearances, he made it clear that there will be returning cast members. “I can’t reveal who, but there will be characters from the series appearing in the game.” Could that include Vergil, too? “That’s something you’ll have to play the game to find out!” says Kobayashi. It looks like fans interested in Vergil’s involvement (if any) won’t know anything for sure until DMC 4’s release.

3. Nero won’t be getting new weapons
Dante received new weaponry when defeating bosses in DMC3, but the same won’t hold true for Nero. “The focus on Nero won’t be on getting new weapons from bosses, but on powering up the Devil Bringer over the course of the game,” Kobayashi reveals. “The Devil Bringer will have many different abilities that can be used to attack enemies as well as to move around.”

4. The Devil Trigger could return
Although we haven’t seen Nero display any kind of Devil Trigger aptitude, the team hasn’t specifically stated that this feature won’t be in the game. A similar mechanic exists in Nero’s ability to rev up his sword, but Kobayashi tells us that “revving up the Red Queen is more like powering up attacks than a replacement for the Devil Trigger.”


5. DMC4 will be universally the same difficulty
It’s well known that Devil May Cry 3’s North American version was more difficult than its Japanese counterpart, but that won’t be the case with DMC 4. “Although I wasn’t directly involved with DMC3, from what I know, they made the game more difficult to respond to North American demand for a difficult game,” Kobayashi says. “With DMC4, we plan to keep all of the versions consistent around the world.”

6. Devil May Cry 4 will be identical on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Kobayashi explains that “there won’t be any differences between the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions.” This is interesting, since Devil May Cry 4’s development was originally focused on the PlayStation 3. PS3 "Already Making Comeback"

"All the production problems have been solved. We are making a comeback already,” Stringer said in an associated press report.

He reiterated that the PS3 is going to play a major role in Sony’s overall financial s, calling the console “a key driver” for growth.

Sony's meeting was reportedly upbeat, with talk of recovery in games and big strides in flat-panel TV and digital camera sales. But shareholders remain cautious. Shareholder Kazuhiko Machida, for instance, is particularly aware of Sony’s PS3 missteps.

"It's hard to think that Sony has solved all its problems," he said. "The Sony brand has taken a beating. I think Sony may be at a crossroads, but it's too early to say 'Banzai!'”

But Stringer still has an immense amount of faith in Sony’s games business. Earlier today, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai said that 380 games would be hitting PS3 this year.

"We believe that the PS3 going forward will be vital to our future, and succeed,” Stringer said.

A spokesperson for Ubisoft has confirmed this morning that yesterday’s release schedule was incorrect. Haze is still to be confirmed for PC and Xbox 360, apparently, so the 30th November date now slips into the realms of TBA. The exclusive PS3 date remains the same. Enjoy the Screens.

Sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe have hit a wall according to a new report from Screen Digest, which suggests Microsoft is struggling to expand the user base for the next-gen console.

"For Xbox 360, European hardware sales seem to have hit a wall. The target market is still too focused on adult males and the brand does not enjoy the same cachet in non-Anglo Saxon markets as it does in the US and, to a lesser extent, the UK," reads the report.

While there are no concerns about appealing to a dedicated gaming audience, "failing to break out of a small number of genres and thereby appealing to groups outside of hardcore gamer," is a bigger problem according to Screen Digest.

Despite these issues the report does highlight that some of the most anticipated titles for the coming Q4 are for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live is described as a "beacon of hope".

According to the analysts group, the Nintendo Wii is splitting business models across the industry.

"Some publishers are investing much less saying they will leave the platform drivers to Nintendo and ride their coat tails by spending very little on mediocre quality titles which will give some return."

On the other hand, "the combination of lower development costs and fastest growing installed base confers significant economic advantages in publishing games for Wii relative to competitive consoles, and this has lead to some third-party publishers increasing investment levels in developing for the platform."

The report points out that a low return on Wii software may hamper investment by publishers in other formats, as it simply does not generate as much profit at a time when PS3 and Xbox 360 development costs are rising.

And on the PlayStation 3, the report criticises Sony for not educating consumers as to what's in the box and relying too much on the PlayStation brand. Because of this a price drop is inevitable, says Screen Digest.

"A price drop before the end of the year is inevitable and would be in line with previous PlayStation first time price reduction timings."

"Marketing material has tended towards the esoteric and abstract and has seemingly failed to resonate with the consumer."

It also points out that Sony could drop a "bombshell" by the end of the year with a combined price drop and the launch of the Home virtual networking and online game service.

Late last year, Gran Turismo designer Kazunori Yamauchi told fans that the next installment in his popular driving simulation series would reflect a change and become "a fully realized online car life simulation."

While it might not be one of the "core principles" Yamauchi referred to last year, the designer did confirm one change in store for the next Gran Turismo in a recent polyphony digital by French motorsports program turbo. For the first time in a Gran Turismo game, players will be able to select an inside-the-car viewpoint with the steering wheel and dashboard visible.

"To translate the real car into 3D, we use data and assets provided by the car manufacturers, but we also use a scanner that completely digitizes a car," Yamauchi told the show. "Here's a scoop: We're also modeling the dashboards because you can drive from the interior view in the upcoming Gran Turismo 5."


When asked about the Gran Turismo five in-car views and recent rumors of downloadable content for Gran Turismo HD for the PlayStation 3, a Sony representative told GameSpot, "We haven't made any recent announcements on the GT franchise."
